A Private Person Advocating Public Interests: Legal Interests? Legal Curiosity? Legal Racketeering?
17
May
On 17 May, the St Petersburg International Legal Forum will host a workshop titled: "A Private Person Advocating Public Interests: Legal Interests? Legal Curiosity? Legal Racketeering?".

Is it possible for private individuals to advocate wider common interests? When and in what manner is it possible for them to do so? In the proposed discussion, we plan to explore the activity boundaries for individual activists. How do we know if the activist is genuinely trying to make up for the government’s failure to deliver on its duty to advance the common good, or is only in it out of his personal mercantile interest or, worse still, is committing an act of legal subversion? We will address these questions with the aid of examples taken from most sensitive areas of public life, such as culture, urban development and public procurement.
