A presentation of the book “Ancient manuscripts. The first Russian legal documents” was given at the law faculty of Lomonosov Moscow State University. The book, which is based on artefacts displayed at the Russian State Historical Museum, was published by Pepeliaev Group with the support of the law faculty of the Moscow State University. The presentation was a part of the opening ceremony for the National Law History Museum.
Manuscripts are the most ancient legal documents in Russia. The book “Ancient manuscripts. The first Russian legal documents” demonstrates the most significant documents, most of which had never been published before. The book discloses the reasons why these manuscripts were written, categorises them and tells which rulers, historical persons and events are associated with the most important and unusual documents.
The book was prepared with the assistance of experts from the Department of Written Sources of the Russian State Historical Museum, from the History of State and Law Chair of Lomonosov Moscow State University and from Pepeliaev Group.
“This album opens up a series of publications dedicated to deep roots of the Russian law. Russian legal tradition is no less ancient than it is in the countries which habitually take pride in their centuries-long legal culture. Researching and popularising national legal traditions and achievements is an important part of developing a lifestyle of living by the law”, comments Sergey Pepeliaev, managing partner at Pepeliaev Group.
