International Dispute Settlement: Prospects in Russia and CIS

On 14 September 2010 Varvara Knutova, leading associate of the dispute resolution practice at Pepeliaev Group, will speak at a conference “International Dispute Settlement: Prospects in Russia and CIS” organised by the American Bar Association (ABA) with the support of Pepeliaev Group.

Based on extensive case law Varvara will talk about the specifics of recognising and enforcing foreign court judgements and protecting foreign investors’ rights in Russia at the workshop “Judicial Assistance and Enforcement Proceedings within the Framework of International Dispute Settlement”. At the workshop participants will discuss judicial assistance and enforcement proceedings from two perspectives: from the perspective of Russian parties to disputes seeking assistance abroad and from the perspective of foreign parties requiring assistance in Russia.

Judicial assistance provided during dispute resolution outside national litigation constitutes an integral part of international litigation and arbitration. The need for such assistance is evident, especially at the stage when a foreign court judgement is recognised and enforced in Russia.

• Levying execution on assets abroad
• Corporate raids
• Disputes involving the Russian Federation and state-owned companies

The speakers at a conference will include leading lawyers of Russian and Western law firms, representative of Russian and US justice agencies, judges of international arbitration courts and in-house lawyers of leading Russian companies. This forum will establish a unique platform to develop joint decisions on many controversial issues of law and to extend links between lawyers from different countries.
