Pepeliaev Group’s partners spoke at a seminar for Chinese business figures as part of the firm's latest business mission to Beijing

On 2 February Beijing played host to a joint seminar of law firms Pepeliaev Group and the Beijing office of King and Wood Mallesons. The event was organised with the support of the Trade Representation of the Russian Federation in China, and representatives of more than 40 Chinese companies interested in cooperation with Russia took part. These companies are active in the areas of construction, telecommunications, petrochemical and timber industries, etc. 

As part of an introductory speech, Rustem Ahmetshin (Senior Partner, Pepeliaev Group) and Harry Du (Partner, King and Wood Mallesons) spoke about the development of Russian-Chinese relationships, the undying interest between Russian and Chinese companies as well as about the need to act within the framework of the law to make cooperation as successful as possible. 

Rustem Ahmetshin gave a speech on ‘Mineral Resource Use in Russia’. He spoke about the legislation governing the use of mineral resources and foreign investments in this sector and provided examples of successful projects involving foreign investments. 

Ilya Bolotnov (Partner, Pepeliaev Group) explored the topic of ‘Investments in Russia - Basic Knowledge’. Ilya spoke about Russian legislation creating comfortable conditions for foreign investors in Russia and about the types of legal entities that guarantee successful business. He also gave examples of successful investment projects. 

Tian Wenjing (Partner, King and Wood Mallesons) gave a presentation dedicated to the topic of ‘Public Private Partnership: Is Your Company Ready for This Form of Cooperation?’. Within the framework of her presentation Ms. Tian Wenjing spoke about the main trends in the development and implementation of PPP projects in Russia during the last 10 years and provided the relevant legal basis for the successful implementation of such projects. 

Liu Zhizhi (Partner, King and Wood Mallesons) gave a closing speech dedicated to the topic of ‘Entering the Russian Construction Market as a Contractor’. Ms. Liu Zhizhi covered the issues relating to Russian legislation on construction and the issues of incorporating a legal entity for the performance of work within Russia. She also provided a list of necessary permits and licenses as well as recommendations on how to obtain them. 

The seminar became one of the events in a series of forums held as part of the implementation of the One Belt One Road initiative. 

The participants of the seminar were full of praise for the contributions of all of the speakers, which serves as further confirmation of the ever increasing number of Chinese companies interested in building active business cooperation with Russia.
