Sergey Sosnovsky Returns to Pepeliaev Group’s Team

Pepeliaev Group is delighted to announce the return of Sergey Sosnovsky, who, after a brief break, has rejoined the firm as a Partner to once again play an active role in the company’s growth and development.

Sergey is one of the most prominent and respected experts in tax law and tax dispute resolution. 

His more than 20 years of experience encompass large-scale advisory projects as well as dozens of successfully resolved disputes with tax authorities, which include cases before Russia’s Supreme Commercial Court, Supreme Court, and Constitutional Court. Among his cases that have set legal precedents are:  

• winning a case before the Constitutional Court concerning the 0% VAT rate on time-charter agreements;

• obtaining confirmation in the Supreme Court of the right to deduct VAT on operations (restoration works) that are exempt from taxation;

• successfully defending before the Presidium of the Supreme Commercial Court loyalty programmes run by a major international financial holding structure. 

He has also represented leading companies in the construction, oil and gas, financial, and automotive sectors, both at the pre-trial stage and in court proceedings.

For many years, Sergey has been addressing complex taxation issues across various industries, in particular in the construction sector, including road infrastructure. He advises major market players on significant infrastructure and investment construction projects involving both residential and commercial real estate.

Alongside his client work, Sergey is deeply engaged in academic activity. He holds a PhD in Law, and has been teaching tax and administrative law in the Faculty of Law at St Petersburg University for more than 15 years. Since 2024, he has served as Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the tax law journal Nalogoved, while he is also the author of several university textbooks.
