The main trends in the banking and finance industry in recent years have been consolidation and mergers of players in the financial sector. Regional branch expansion by financial institutions, along with stricter regulatory requirements, promote competition and availability of banking and financial services.

To ensure stability of the banking sector, Russian legislation is undergoing general reform, particularly with regard to protecting investors’ and clients’ rights. A system of State deposit guarantees is being implemented.
