Alexey Konevsky
PartnerYou left an international law firm to continue your career at Pepeliaev Group, a Russian law firm. Why?
The reputation of Pepeliaev Group as Russia’s leading law firm was the deciding factor for my choice. It was very important for me that the company has a well-deserved reputation and is acknowledged in the legal and business community as an expert in Russian law. The company not only advises clients but also shapes law enforcement practice. I was attracted to the idea of working for such a firm.
Did the firm meet your expectations?
Yes. The first year was both tough and challenging. Joining a leading company is a serious career opportunity. At the same time it demands a higher level of commitment and significant efforts to improve and develop professionally.
Adapting to work for the firm coincided with the complicated economic environment in Russia. This had a serious impact on the work of lawyers. However, it proved easy and painless to adapt to working with my new colleagues.
What would you cite as the overriding qualities of Pepeliaev Group?
Thorough legal expertise, academic approach, the variety of clients, from leading Russian and international corporations to medium-sized businesses operating in virtually all sectors of the economy, from traditional industries to innovation.
Does Pepeliaev Group offer real career opportunities?
I was surprised by the amount of care and time dedicated by Pepeliaev Group to the professional development of its employees, something that is rare at many international companies. You will find a large number of diverse training courses, seminars and other educational events. Many of these events are unique. For example, as part of the educational project Intellectual Wednesday, Pepeliaev Group offers a unique opportunity to discuss on a regular basis practical issues with leading research experts, the drafters of legislation and high-ranking law enforcement officials. This provides significant opportunities for the professional growth of each employee.
Does working for Pepeliaev Group place any restrictions on the firm’s employees?
The main restriction is the need to devote most of your time, including outside working hours, to client service and work, prepare articles and comments for the mass media, share experience and deliver speeches at various seminars and conferences. As a result, there is little time left for personal matters.
Do you feel comfortable working for Pepeliaev Group?
The atmosphere is very friendly. This is essential, as we spend most of our time with our colleagues, including from other departments. Excellent relations with everybody enable me to feel comfortable at work.
What have you gained professionally and personally from working for Pepeliaev Group?
Work for Pepeliaev Group requires time, effort and energy. If I may quote here Alice from Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll: “If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!” This is particularly important in the difficult times we face today. During my time working for Pepeliaev Group, I have mastered this skill more and more.
What is your most vivid impression from working for Pepeliaev Group?
I am struck above all by the way people relax at Pepeliaev Group. Usually corporate events here are very interesting and a lot of fun. Colleagues from various departments prepare a programme themselves. It includes interesting performances and comedy shows. The whole event is covered by one topic. Jokes, tricks, humour and a free and friendly atmosphere –all these factors are part and parcel of the firm’s style. This style makes the atmosphere pleasant both at corporate events and during the working day.
